Cardiology Consultation and Initial Examination in New Jersey
Whether you have been referred by your primary care physician or are seeking expert cardiovascular care on your own, your first visit to Cross County Cardiology is designed to give you a thorough, personalized assessment of your heart health. Our board-certified, FACC-credentialed cardiologists take the time to listen, evaluate, and develop a clear plan tailored to your individual needs.
Who Should See a Cardiologist?
A cardiology consultation is appropriate if you are experiencing cardiac symptoms, have been identified as being at elevated cardiovascular risk, or need expert management of a known heart condition. Common reasons to schedule an initial consultation include:
- Chest pain, pressure, or tightness — especially with exertion
- Shortness of breath that is new, worsening, or unexplained
- Palpitations, racing heartbeat, or irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or unexplained fainting (syncope)
- Leg swelling or edema without an identified cause
- A family history of heart disease, sudden cardiac death, or cardiomyopathy
- Abnormal findings on a screening ECG, echocardiogram, or stress test
- Elevated cardiovascular risk based on blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes
- Pre-operative cardiac clearance for surgery
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your initial appointment at Cross County Cardiology typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. It begins with a thorough review of your medical history, including current and prior symptoms, existing conditions, medications, family history, and lifestyle factors.
A complete physical examination follows, with particular attention to cardiovascular findings including blood pressure in both arms, heart sounds, peripheral pulses, jugular venous pressure, and signs of fluid retention. Your cardiologist will also review any prior test results, imaging, and records you have brought or that have been sent in advance.
Diagnostic Testing at Your Initial Visit
Depending on your clinical presentation, one or more diagnostic tests may be performed during or shortly after your first consultation:
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
A 12-lead ECG is routinely performed at most initial cardiology visits. It provides immediate information about heart rate, rhythm, conduction, and signs of ischemia or prior infarction — all within minutes.
Echocardiogram
If structural heart disease, heart failure, or valvular abnormality is suspected, a transthoracic echocardiogram may be ordered. This ultrasound-based test provides real-time images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and function.
Laboratory Work
Blood tests — including a lipid panel, complete metabolic panel, and thyroid function tests — are frequently ordered to assess metabolic risk factors and screen for conditions that can affect cardiovascular health.
Ambulatory Monitoring
If arrhythmia is suspected, a Holter monitor or event recorder may be arranged to capture your heart rhythm over 24 hours to 30 days during your normal daily activities.
Cardiovascular Risk Assessment and Prevention
For patients without established heart disease, your cardiologist will calculate your 10-year cardiovascular risk using validated tools, review modifiable risk factors, and develop a prevention strategy that may include lifestyle counseling, dietary guidance, and medication recommendations when appropriate.
Primary prevention — stopping heart disease before it starts — is one of the most impactful interventions in cardiology. Our team takes this role seriously and provides the time and education needed to help you reduce your risk.
