Advanced Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging in New Jersey

Accurate cardiac imaging is the foundation of modern cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment planning. At Cross County Cardiology, we offer a comprehensive suite of advanced non-invasive imaging studies — allowing our cardiologists to visualize your heart’s structure, function, and blood supply without surgical procedures or ionizing radiation in many cases. Our imaging capabilities span echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and vascular ultrasound across our Northern New Jersey locations.

Why Non-Invasive Imaging Is Central to Cardiovascular Care

The ability to “see” inside the heart and vasculature without catheterization has transformed cardiology. Non-invasive imaging allows our physicians to:

  • Assess heart chamber size, wall thickness, and contractile function
  • Evaluate heart valve structure and blood flow across all four valves
  • Identify regional wall motion abnormalities suggesting prior infarction or ischemia
  • Measure ejection fraction and cardiac output
  • Detect pericardial effusions and structural abnormalities
  • Assess blood vessel patency and flow velocity in peripheral arteries and veins

Cardiac Imaging Studies We Perform

Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)

The TTE is the most frequently ordered cardiac imaging study. A handheld transducer is placed on the chest to generate real-time ultrasound images of all four cardiac chambers, both ventricles’ function, all four valves, and the pericardium. It is the first-line test for evaluating heart failure, valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, and congenital abnormalities.

Stress Echocardiogram

Imaging is performed at rest and immediately after exercise or pharmacologic stress (using dobutamine). This allows detection of wall motion abnormalities that develop under stress — a hallmark of coronary artery disease. Stress echo combines the functional information of a stress test with the anatomical detail of echocardiography.

Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

A specialized probe passed into the esophagus provides higher-resolution images of cardiac structures that are difficult to visualize from the chest surface — including the left atrial appendage, mitral valve, atrial septum, and aorta. TEE is used pre-procedurally for many structural interventions and to rule out cardiac sources of embolism.

Nuclear Stress Test (Myocardial Perfusion Imaging)

A small amount of radiotracer is injected intravenously and imaging is performed at rest and during stress. The resulting perfusion images show which regions of the heart muscle receive adequate blood flow — and which do not. Nuclear imaging is particularly valuable when echocardiographic image quality is limited or when precise quantification of ischemic territory is needed.

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound

Combining real-time B-mode imaging with Doppler flow analysis, vascular duplex ultrasound is used to evaluate the carotid arteries, lower extremity arteries and veins, renal arteries, and abdominal aorta. It is essential for diagnosing peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis, and carotid stenosis.

Who Benefits From Advanced Cardiac Imaging?

Advanced imaging is appropriate for a broad range of patients, including those with:

  • Known or suspected coronary artery disease
  • Heart failure or cardiomyopathy (any cause)
  • Valvular heart disease (stenosis or regurgitation of any valve)
  • Atrial fibrillation or other complex arrhythmias
  • Hypertensive heart disease
  • Symptoms of peripheral vascular disease
  • Pre-operative cardiac risk stratification
  • Screening based on strong family history or elevated risk profile
